KEEP ISLINGTON MOVING
Say No to Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs)
Annette Road
The Council have recently announced an extension to their LTN programme in the form of a proposed "Annette Road Liveable Neighbourhood". We do not currently have much information about this new development beyond that available on the Council website, here. The initial proposals are for three new traffic filters as indicated on the map opposite. Based on the experience of previous Islington LTNs we expect it will lead to further congestion on boundary roads (in this case, Holloway Road, Hornsey Road, and Seven Sisters Road, as well as Tollington Road which bisects the area). It can also be expected to have a negative effect on the local economy, particularly since the car park for the large Waitrose branch in the area would become more or less inaccessible. "Consultation" on these proposals has already begun and so we urge anyone who lives or works in the area to respond to the Council as a matter of urgency using one or more of the channels described on the Council website. The most effective channel is probably simply to email the Council here: AnnetteRoadLN@islington.gov.uk .

Update 24.7.24. I attended a Council-run "in-person event" (the usual process of seating residents around a large map of the area and asking how it could be improved) on this scheme last night which confirms our suspicion that the proposals are misguided. Residents were more or less unanimous in reporting that by far the biggest problem in the area was drug dealers and associated menaces and that the proposed road closures would make this problem worse not better. This feedback mirrors the experience of residents of other LTNs in Highbury for example and calls into question whether the policy of drastically reducing traffic in a neighbourhood really does make it "Safer". It will be interesting to see whether the Council faithfully reports this feedback and takes it into account.
